Lejeune was best known as a painter of battles, reproducing in great detail the uniforms and characteristics of his comrades in arms. He took part in all the major napoleonic campaigns and was promoted to Général de brigade on 23 September, 1812. He was also wounded several times and made Grand Officier de la Légion d'Honneur. After the July Revolution, he painted mostly landscapes and was appointed director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse.
This painting was sold at auction at Drouot on 15 November, 1996 where it fetched a price of 160,000 francs.
