This bust is the result of a commission made in 1800 in commemoration of the generals killed during the Revolution (Dampierre, Marceau, Hoche, Joubert, etc.) and completed in 1803 (Kléber, Leclerc, Muiron, Desaix). Chinard, who already had been commissioned for monuments in the Place des Victoires and Place de Clermont-Ferrand in honour of Desaix, worked from Desaix's death mask, something for which he was to be criticised by Vivant Denon.
This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Château de Malmaison et Bois-Préau.
