Catafalque and Burial Chapel of Napoleon in the Church of the Invalides in Paris on 15 December 1840

The Prince de Joinville led the coffin into the Cour d’Honneur of the Hôtel des Invalides, which had been decorated with banners, to join the King, who waited in front of the Church of Saint Louis. After the ceremony, the coffin was exhibited in the choir under the monumental catafalque drawn by Henri Labrouste. It remained there for one and a half months.  Every day, thousands of people crowded into the church, which remained open to the public until Christmas.
