This fresco was completed in 1856 in honour of the Empress Eugenie, who created the Fondation Eugène Napoléon at the birth of the Prince Imperial.
The Fondation was created thanks to a donation offered by the city of Paris in 1853 to celebrate the imperial marriage, money given instead a set of diamonds of great value which Eugenie refused. The Fondation was initially to be a pious project aimed at the education of poor girls.
In the fresco, designed by the architect Hittorff, the Empress is pictured kneeling in front of the poor girls, under the benevolent gaze of the Blessed Virgin.
