Monge followed Bonaparte during the First Italian Campaign in order to choose the works of art to be sent back to France. He then accompanied him in Egypt where he directed with Berthollet the academic work of the expedition. He was president of the Institut d'Egypte (see the article in the Library The 'Institut d'Égypte' and the Description de l'Égypte at the link) and director of the Ecole polytechnique.
This painting was commissioned bye Louis-Philippe for the Musée historique de Versailles in 1842.
