General Jean Rapp (1771-1821)

This painting was commissioned for Versailles in 1835; it is a copy of a work now lost.
Sub-Lieutenant in 1794, aide-de-camp to Desaix and captain in 1796 and squadron chief in 1798, Rapp became Bonaparte’s aide-de-camp in 1800 and was to remain so until 1814. Brigadier General in 1803, Division General in 1804, he took part in all the great campaigns of the Empire.
