Her Majesty the Empress Eugénie’s visit to Egypt

The Empress Eugénie visited Upper Egypt between 25th
October and 12th November 1869 immediately
before presiding at the inauguration ceremony for the
Suez Canal. She made the journey on board a dalabieh,
a flat-bottomed boat pulled by tugs, accompanied
by her nieces and their governess as well as
Misses Marion and de Larminat.
The rest of her entourage came in other boats.
The principal ports of call on this voyage down the Nile
were: Minieh, Keneh, the Dackel oasis, Edfu, Asswan and,
on the way back, Esneh, Luxor, Karnak, Thebes, Memphis,
Saqqarah and Gizeh.
