Commissioned by the Prefect of the Seine, Nicolas Frochot,
in 1804 or 1805 for the Salle des Assises (Court of Assizes)
of the Palais de Justice in Paris; painted in
Prud'hon's atelier at the Sorbonne; sketched before 1806;
finished for the Salon of 1808; placed in the
tribunal criminel (Criminal court) of the Palais de
Justice in Paris in 1809; was part of the exhibition
Prix décennaux (Prizes of the Decade) of 1810 and
at the Salon of 1814; gicven back to the artist
in November 1815 then exhibited in the Luxembourg Museum
from 1818 and in the Louvre after the artist's death
in November 1815.
