The Suez canal was built during the the years
1859 to 1869. In 1888, in order to increase medical capabilities on the isthmus, the Company built the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Hospital in the centre of the isthmus, 5 kilometres from Ismailia, on the El Guisr slope facing Lake Timsah.
Hippolyte Arnoux's photographic archive is held by the Association du Souvenir de Ferdinand de Lesseps et du canal de Suez at the Archives nationales.
