'The Freedom of Italy dedicated to Free Men'
Bonaparte is here represented as the saviour of the republic. He embraces the allegories of the People (Hercules) and Wisdom (Minerva) who trample underfoot the imperial eagle of Austria.
This engraving (after a drawing by Philippe-Auguste Hennequin (1762-1833) now in the Paris Bibliothèque Nationale) was made after the signing of the the Treaty of Campoformio, 17 October 1797.
This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Châteaux de Malmaison et
Bois-Préau.
