Lieutenant of the 4th Dragoons (1804-1812)

The brass dragoon helmet is decorated with a seal- or leopard-skin turban with crimped horse hair for the crest. Beginning in 1791, this helmet was progressively ornamented with a leather visor, a horse-hair guard to protect from sabre blows to the nape of the neck, a plume and enameled chin straps.

The 4th regiment of dragoons fought in Austria and Poland, before being sent to Spain where it fought with distinction at Talavera and at Albuera. See “Les souvenirs du colonel Morin sur son séjour en Espagne (1812-1813)” annotated by colonel Willing in the Revue du souvenir napoléonien n°378.
