Lunch at the Ramasseum in Thebes

The Empress Eugénie made a journey into Upper Egypt
between the 25th October and the 12th
November 1869 shortly before presiding at the
inauguration ceremony for the Suez Canal.
The main ports of call on this journey up the Nile
were Minieh, Keneh, the Daekel oasis,
Edfu, Aswan and on the return Esneh, Luxor, Karnak,
Thebes, Memphis, Saqqarah and Gizeh.
A party of about sixty French people invited
by the khedive Ismail Pasha made the same journey
before going to Port-Saïd for the inauguration of the
canal.
