In 1808, when the Emperor was reveiwing Marshal Ney's
troops before Madrid, Mademoiselle de Saint-Simon
threw herself in front of Napoleon's horse and cried out:
“Pardon, pardon for my father”. Touched by her tears
the Emperor bade her stand and said: “Very well. I grant your
father pardon. The only punishment I leave him
is remorse for having taken up arms against his
own fatherland”.
