The first meeting between Napoleon and Marie-Louise was originally destined to take place at Compiègne, but the French Emperor, in his impatience to see his wife and accompanied by Murat, met the procession en route at the Corneille coach stop. Soaked through from the rain, his arrival was announced and he climbed into Marie-Louise's carriage and embraced his new wife.
