Napoleon

Canova met Napoleon five times but the First Consul refused to pose. The sculptor however modeled an initial buts is plaster before making a second which was destined for the monumental statue of Napoleon as Mars Peacemaker.

The original bust of this second version has never been authenticated but it is known that Canova himself never made a marble version of it. The head here is turned and the expression is more intense than in the first bust.
