This portrait of General André Masséna is dated Year 5 of the revolutionary calendar (September 1796 to September 1797). The miniature's verso features a horse monogram decoration, completed three years later (signed Raibaud, Year 8) which refers to his military successes in Italy: AMR (André Masséna duc de Rivoli).
In 1806, Augustin completed the portrait of Masséna's sons.
This object is currently on display at the Musée Pierre-Noël in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, as part of the exhibition “Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin. Peintre en miniature” (17 April – 20 June, 2010).
