Portrait of the Prince Imperial on his coming of age

Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, the Prince Imperial, was the son of Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie. Born on 16 March, 1856, he was in line to succeed his father as Emperor until the French defeat against the Prussians in 1870 brought an end to the Empire. The family went into exile, and the Prince Imperial entered the British army as an officer. He served in the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879. On 1 June, 1879, his reconnaissance party was ambushed in Zulu territory and the Prince Imperial was killed during the fighting.
