This magnificent work written by General Berthier, then Minister for War and soon to be Maréchal de France,
is a very technical description of the Battle of Marengo dedicated to the Emperor.
Including two maps and four plans engraved by Barrière, it opens with a watercolour by Carle Vernet showing the presentation of the book by Berthier to Napoleon, 14 June 1805, the anniversary day of the battle, during a ceremony held at Marengo when the emperor laid the first stone of a commemorative monument.

This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Châteaux de Malmaison et
Bois-Préau.
