The ‘Adieux de Fontainebleau’ (detail)

This engraving by Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet (1788-1871)
was based on the painting by Vernet Napoleon's Adieux
to the Garde impériale at Fontainebleau, 20 April 1814.
Napoleon addressed his troops one last time before setting off for Elba: “In these recent times, as in the time of our prosperity, you have never ceased to be models of fidelity and bravery. With more men such as yourselves, our cause would not have been lost”.
