Louis François Lejeune followed two careers, one of a painter and one of a soldier. His signature at the bottom right of the picture, Lejeune, capitaine du Génie/aide-de-camp du général en chef Alex. Berthier. Paris l'an 9 (Lejeune, Captain of the Engineers, /aide-de-camp of chief of staff, Alex. Berthier. Paris an 9), and his selfportrait (here directing to Berthier prisoners who wish to surrender)attest to hi participation in the Battle of Marengo.
This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Château de Malmaison et Bois-Préau.
