At 5pm, Bonaparte at last caught sight of Desaix and Boudet and he stopped the French retreat. Marmont quickly set up a battery of 18 cannon and hailed the Austrian attack.
Desaix attempted a charge but was immediately killed and his division gave way. This was the moment that Kellermann chose to swing round to the right and lead a cavalry charge on the left flank of the enemy. They, surprised by this brisk counter-attack, fell into disarray and retreated behind the Bormida leaving the French in command of the field.
