The Battle of Marengo (detail)

An extract from the catalogue of the Salon of an IX (1801 n°227): “The Premier Consul arrives just at the moment when a bomb explodes close to him (the same bomb killed six men from the 9e brigade légère). He is followed by his aides de camp Duroc, Lauriston, Le Marois, Lacuée; the generals Lasnes [sic], Dupont, Murat; Bessières, Beauharnais, Rivière, Guillotin, etc., and the commanders and officers of his guard.

An Austrian officer, wounded and dying, kills himself with a weapon given to him by Frenchman.

A dog howls next to his master killed the day before.[…]

(to the back right) General Desaix dies in the arms of the son of Colonel Lebrun.”

This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Château de Malmaison et Bois-Préau.
