Begun in March 1801, the Code Pénal was intended to replace a number of laws that had been introduced during the first ten years of the Revolution. With the Code Pénal, Napoleon wanted to legislate on magistrates' freedom and re-establish more rigourous sanctions. It took nearly ten years of discussions to produce, in February 1810, the Code Pénal and its 484 articles.
