This high relief frieze depicts the crossing of the bridge at Arcole, which brings to mind the painting of Horace Vernet completed in 1826. Bonaparte and Augereau lead the charge, whilst the drummer André Estienne follows just behind, in the centre of the composition. The intrepid young soldier, then aged nineteen and inspired forward by his general, throws himself across the bridge in his leaders' wake. This depiction is symbolic of the army's confidence in Bonaparte, with the entire Nation behind its leader. This relief can be found on the right abutment, which looks out onto the Avenue de la Grande Armée.
