Produced from a picture by Charles Thévenin (1764-1838), The preparations for the crossing of the Alps, held in Versailles, this engraving shows the soldiers of the sapper regiments hard at work: hollowing out tree trunks, putting cannon barrels in them, using campaign forges. Conditions were so difficult that more than 1500 men from the local Valais region had to be enrolled in order to widen the roads, reinforce the bridges and haul the artillery up the pass.
