The scene is the evening of 19 Brumaire (10 November 1799). Lucien Bonaparte is in the chair and the three future consuls are seated in the centre, still undecided as to the result of the coup d'Etat. The artist give a perfect representation of the atmosphere in the Salle de l'Orangerie at the Château de Saint-Cloud, weakly lit by the wall lights.
This work is part of the exhibition Marengo. Une victoire politique, which lasts until 28 August 2000 at the Museum of the Châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau.
