In 1862, the town of Cadenet suggested erecting a monument in memory of one of its sons, André Estienne, a drummer in Bonaparte's army during the first Italian campaign. It was not until 1892, however, that fundraising began. It nevertheless quickly reached its target and the statue, which was inaugurated on 11 August 1894 with a number of ministers in attendance, was installed in the Place du Tambour d'Arcole. In 1940, with German forces approaching, the statue was dismantled. In 1943, it came close to being melted down, only saved from this fate by the efforts of a few local resistance fighters. The statue was returned to its original home in 1945. Since 1996, the town of Cadenet has been twinned with Arcole.
