The Franco-British expedition to China in 1860 became a popular subject for celebrating brave deeds and heroic feats in battle. A large number of illustrations, many of them simplistic and posterior to the Second Empire, soon appeared – often in the form of postcards – depicting the battles that took place during the expedition.
The above scenes depict the capture of Peking (today Beijing) (left) and a French charge led by General Cousin-Montauban (right).
