THE FORMAL REQUEST FOR THE HAND IN MARRIAGE OF MARIE-LOUISE OF AUSTRIA ON BEHALF OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON.
On the seventh March, 1810, at six o'clock in the evening, the Prince de Neufchatel, French Ambassador in Vienna, requested on behalf of H.M. the Emperor Napoleon the hand [in marriage] of the Archduchess Marie Louise. H.M. the Emperor of Austria, having responded to this request in the positive, summoned his daughter, who entered and took her seat to his left. It was then that the Ambassador presented her with the letter and portrait of H.M. the Emperor Napoleon. She read the letter and consented to the request made of her, before attaching the portrait to a gold chain worn around her neck and placing it close to her breast. [sic]
