In 1782, Tippoo Sahib succeeded his father, Hyder-Ali, to become ruler of Mysore, the powerful state in South India, between the Coromandel and Malabar coasts. He fought tenaciously against the British with the help of some French troops provided notably by General de Malartic (1730-1800), gouvernor of the Iles de France et de Bourbon.
