Raffet, at that time simply Charlet's pupil but soon to become one the principal propagators of the Napoleonic legend, knew this episode from the Napoleonic version as printed in the appendix to the Mémorial (1823-1824) but already mentioned by Warden (1817) and O'Meara (1822).
This image forms part of the Eugène de Beauharnais exhibition.
