The sculptor Jean Guillaume Moitte was commissioned as early as 1800 to make the tomb for Desaix whihc was to be laid in the chapel of the Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard. Completed in 1805, it was set in place in 1806 and the marble mason Antonio Bonomi mounetd the ensemble. A bust by Pizzi was placed on the catafalque. Moitte’s monument was a antique-style sarcophagus with a bas-relief depicting Desaix’s death, framed by figures representing the Nile and the Rhine topped with two kneeling victories.
