The Battle of the Piave (1809) is remembered in Santa Lucia di Piave (Veneto, Italy)

A  new monument on the Via Mura in Santa Lucia di Piave, was inaugurated this week by the mayor, Riccardo Szumski, in memory of the so-called “Battaglia del Piave” (“Battle of the Piave”).

Upon it can be read: “Between Mandre and Campana, in the territory of Santa Lucia di Piave, on the left bank of the Piave, at the ford of Lovadina, between 7th and 8th May 1809 the main nucleus of a battle between the French forces of Napoleon Bonaparte […] and the Austrian forces took place […]”

Riccardo Szumski declared: “It was a rather important battle, with a considerable use of men and means. It is also mentioned on Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Our municipal administration is also carrying out a project to enhance the area from an artistic and historical point of view and that is also why we thought of erecting this stele, in memory of an important historical event which remains little-known until now”.
