History Today (UK) features an article by Frank Prochaska on the American constitution and a 19th century English political theorist's critique thereof. The article is interesting for its analysis of an “inflexible” and “restrictive” constitution and the effect that it had on political leaders in America, as well as ideas on “benevolent despotism”.
