An article on livescience.com (USA) features a report on a recent study into a mass grave found in Kassel, Germany. The investigation found that the skeletons, initially suspected to be victims of Nazi executions, are more likely to be soldiers from Napoleon's Grande Armée who died following the retreat from Leipzig (otherwise known as the Battle of Nations) in 1813 and 1814. Some of the samples tested contained bacteria indicating trench fever as a possible cause of death.
Further details of the study can be found here on the livescience website (external link). The full report is published in the September 2011 issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (external link requiring access account).
