This monumental painting was commissioned from Ingres in 1811 – together with Ossian’s Dream – for the Palais de Monte Cavallo destined for Napoleon I (today the Palais du Quirinal). It was given by Pope Pius IX to Napoleon III in 1857 who presented it to the Ecole des Beaux Arts (now the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts” – ENSB-A). It was displayed in the “Amphithéatre d’Honneur” until 1969 whereafter it was deposited at the Louvre for security reasons. This large painting (2.76 x 5.30 m, 1812), painted with distemper to imitate the art of fresco, is currently being restored (January 2017), and will be presented to the public in the exhibition “Antigone à Marianne, Rêves et réalités de la République”, from 24 February to 20 April 2017 (at ENSB-A) before being reinstalled in the newly-restored Amphithéatre d’Honneur.
