The BBC website (UK) reports on a recent call to have the portrait of Sir Thomas Picton removed from a crown court in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Picton, originally from Haverfordwest, was the most senior general to die at the Battle of Waterloo. Picton, whilst governor of Trinidad, was accused of torturing a young girl. The case went through a number of appeals, and Picton was eventually able to return to his military career.
James Epstein's article “Politics of Colonial Sensation: The Trial of Thomas Picton and the Cause of Louisa Calderon” (which appeared in the American Historical Review) offers an extremely detailed and interesting account of the trial and the considerations surrounding the verdicts returned.
