This book is a collection of beautiful photographs of the island accompanying two previously unpublished period texts giving a military and civil report on the island during the time of Napoleon's captivity there. One, the “Military Report on the island of St Helena, May 16th 1816”, by Major Emmett with the assistance of Basil Jackson and the other, a “Report on the state of the public buildings in Jamestown led by the committee of inspection of public buildings of the government of St Helena”, from volume 117 of the “St Helena Records”, ordered by the Governor in Council of St Helena. Close inspection of the book allows the reader to walk the length and breadth of the island without leaving their armchair.
