Heinrich von Brandt was eighteen when he enlisted in the French Army, and in 1808 he was sent to Spain as an officer in Napoleon's Grande Armee. Amongst many other battles, Heinrich fought at the siege of Saragossa and took part in Russian campaign – from which only 60 of Brandt's regiment were to return. With this volume (translated and edited by Jonathan North), these direct, touching and non-partisan memoirs – which were translated into French, German and Polish in the nineteenth century – are now available in English.
