Originally from Perche and cousin of the Empress Josephine, Maurice de Tascher started at l'Ecole de Fontainebleau in 1804. At the age of 20, he received a baptism of fire at Jena, where he was injured. He subsequently fought at Heilsberg, Baylen, Wagram, Borodino, Berezina. De Tascher died from exhaustion in 1813. Throughout the course of his military career, he kept a journal in which he described, in short note-form, his experiences and details of the places he visited.
