This book is a study of the Armée d'Italie between 1792 and 1797. During the period, this war machine mobilised by the Revolution was a petri dish for strategic and tactical experimentation. Over the course of a long positional war strung out along the Alps, the revolutionary army proceeded to develop new methods of warfare. These soldiers of Year II went on to become masters of small-scale warfare. Issues of provisions, supplies and finance – particularly in the years 1793 and 1794 – for an army numbering several tens of thousands of soldiers in a peripheral theatre of war also posed a considerable logistical challenge to the war's participants. Alongside the more conventional warfare waged during the campaign was the idealistic struggle against the monarchic powers in the area, with propaganda and intelligence gathering services just some of the tools used.
