From the publishers:
This book takes a look at the military and political career and subsequent downfall of Joachim Murat. Renata de Lorenzo presents this biography of the soldier who made his name on the battlefield, alongside Napoleon, and who later reigned as king of Naples. Taking in his humble origins, his phenomenally successful military career, the famous Italian campaigns, his exploits in Egypt and Prussia, and his arrival on the Neapolitan throne. In addition to the important political events, de Lorenzo also retells the story of Murat's passionate relationship with Catherine Bonaparte (the French emperor's younger sister), life at the Neapolitan court and his conflicted relationship with Napoleon. The second half of the book covers Murat's Neapolitan period: named king in 1808, Murat – already hated by the clergy and nobility for having “usurped” the Bourbons – strove to earn the people's support and govern a state in financial difficulties whilst at the same time remaining loyal to Napoleon.
