John Sugden's first of two volumes here claims to have stripped away the legends of the great man, reconstructing Nelson's private and public life from scratch. It charts the early period of Nelson' life, largely neglected by earlier writers, that is, from childhood the battle of Cape St Vincent. According to the publishers, this is the first full account full account of Nelson's early voyages and the first complete analysis of the formative incidents in his career, including his conflict with civil and naval superiors in the West Indies, his campaigns in Corsica and his service as a commodore in the Mediterranean.
John Sugden is the author of books on American history.
