Raglan: From the Peninsular to the Crimea is the first biography of Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, the first Baron Raglan, and the workings of an Army that was failing to keep up with social and technological change.

As commander of the Expeditionary Force to the Crimea, he must take his share of the responsibility for the hardship suffered by the men under him, particularly during the winter of 1854-55, but the fact remains that Raglan never lost a battle for which he was fully responsible. As this biography of a pivotal 19th Century military figure reveals, Raglan's achievements over a career spanning fifty years should not be judged so effortlessly.

Surprisingly and controversially, Field Marshall Lord Raglan is revealed in this story as a brave, thoughtful, caring and capable man, who found himself an easy target for often personal attacks by critics of an outdated military system.

John Sweetman read modern history at Brasenose College, Oxford. He then researched the Crimean War to gain his PhD at King's College, London, and became interested in the career of Lord Raglan. Previously Head of Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Sweetman is now retired.
