The formation of Napoleon Bonaparte’s painting is still a topical theme and the subject of various interpretations and reinterpretations. This book also offers one. It is a manual for understanding the cultural policy of the Napoleonic regime in the field of visual arts and its real implications in the field of cultural heritage. The Nietzschean model of the will to power is a reference and ideological framework for understanding the observed issues. After all, it was this will that led the young French general to become the first consul, then the emperor of the French and the king of Italy. He let this will to power appear in his image to represent his majesty through an impressive medium such as art. The action was followed by a reaction; Napoleon’s will to power became part of an artistic concept that artists embraced to further complete it. She soon influenced Napoleonic legend and myth to live her second life and spread over historical memory. Art thus became a mirror of power, in which Napoleon’s will shone. In this form, it speaks to us through the preserved cultural heritage of the Napoleonic, presented in castles and chateaux administered by the National Monuments Institute.

The Mirror of Power is a free continuation of the book The Thirteenth Chamber of Napoleon and is the first publication on the market mapping the pillars of Napoleon’s power and their image in the collections of castles and chateaux of the Czech Republic. The book contains synthetically and analytically processed chapters, which follow detailed iconographic analyzes of significant Napoleonics, documenting the reflection of Napoleon Bonaparte’s power in visual art. This is a peer-reviewed monograph, which is the result of a research task supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

Formování obrazu Napoleona Bonaparta je stále aktuálním tématem a předmětem nejrůznějších interpretací a reinterpretací. Jednu takovou nabízí i tato kniha. Je manuálem pro pochopení kulturní politiky Napoleonova režimu v oblasti vizuálního umění a jeho reálných dopadů v oblasti kulturního dědictví. Referenčním a ideovým rámcem pro pochopení sledované problematiky je nietzscheovský model vůle k moci. Vždyť to byla právě tato vůle, která vedla mladého francouzského generála, aby se stal prvním konzulem, poté císařem Francouzů a italským králem. Tuto vůli k moci nechal vystoupit ve svém obrazu, aby prostřednictvím působivého média, jakým bylo umění, reprezentoval svůj majestát. Akci následovala reakce; Napoleonova vůle k moci se stala součástí uměleckého konceptu, jehož se chopili umělci, aby ho dále dotvářeli. Brzy vplynula do napoleonské legendy a mýtu, aby žila svým druhým životem a rozprostřela se nad historickou pamětí. Umění se tak stalo zrcadlem moci, ve kterém se blýskala Napoleonova vůle. V této podobě k nám promlouvá prostřednictvím dochovaného kulturního dědictví napoleonik, prezentovaných na hradech a zámcích ve správě Národního památkového ústavu.

Jedná se o recenzovanou monografii, která je výsledkem výzkumného úkolu podpořeného Ministerstvem kultury ČR.
