Prof Shaw's talk will look at the contrasting images of war in the work of the physician Charles Bell and painter David Wilkie, focusing in particular on Bell's Essays on the Anatomy of Expression in Painting (1806) and its influence on Wilkie's painting Chelsea Pensioners receiving the London Gazette Extraordinary of Thursday June 22nd, 1815 (1822).
