A TROPICAL WUTHERING HEIGHTS
We are reaching the culmination of the Napoleonic bicentennial of the last few years. The month of October 2015 marks the commemoration of the arrival of Napoleon on the island of St Helena, on 15 October 1815, after a voyage of several months on board Northumberland, the first stage of a life now permanently confined, restricted.

This week on 30 September, an official delegation of representatives from the Fondation Napoléon and the Souvenir Napoléonien, departed Paris, in the Emperor's footsteps so to speak, led by the Ambassador Jean Mendelson (representing the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Their journey to St Helena (significantly quicker than Napoleon's but nevertheless long by today's standards), will bring them to that same island on 7 October, for the official re-opening of Longwood House which has been “historically” restored thanks to the International appeal (launched between 2010-2014). Longwood, the residence assigned to Napoleon and his fellow exiles, windswept and rain-beaten, “a tropical Wuthering Heights”, to use the words of Jean-Paul Kauffmann, author of the melancholy essay, “La chambre noire de Longwood” (“The Dark Room at Longwood”). After a ceremony at the Tomb on 11 October, it will be time for celebrations: a parade in Jamestown on 15 October, symbolic planting of trees in the gum-tree forest on 17 October, re-enactment of the arrival of Napoleon on 18 October, and  a chance for the local residents to rediscover Longwood House during the Public Open Days.

We warmly invite you to follow these commemorations with us throughout the month of October on napoleon.org, on our Facebook page Fondation Napoleon in English, and on Twitter, with daily articles, documents and news.

Head of Services to the public and documentation at the Fondation Napoléon

Until 18 October, the French town of Valenciennes is holding two exhibitions. The first “Napoléon gravé à l'acide, une coalition de caricatures!” celebrates Napoleonic caricatures (rare examples of engraved satire from France, Italy, Spain and Britain bequeathed by Général Louis Chéré) and the other “1815-1818 : Valenciennes à l'heure anglaise” explores the period of 3 years during which 10,000 British soldiers occupied the town after the Battle of Waterloo.  A recent article (external link in French) explores this second theme in more detail.

ONLINE > ANTI-NAPOLEON
And why not have a look at the Fondation Napoleon's own online exhibition “Anti-Napoleon”, illustrated with caricatures from the collection of the Musée de Malmaison as well as several items from various institutions in France, Switzerland or from private collectors.

BICENTENARY OF NAPOLEON'S VOYAGE TO ST HELENA
As we enter the month of October 2015, why not follow day by day what happened on board Northumberland exactly 200 years ago as she carried the Emperor to his final destination in this
Extract from the diary of John R. Glover, secretary to Rear admiral Cockburn (on board Northumberland) 29 September - 18 October 1815. Find out more about Glover's diaries on board Northumberland in this article by the librarian of the Fondation Napoléon's Bibliothèque M. Lapeyre Library, Chantal Lheureux-Prévot.

This picture is a detail from 'The Exile's Departure' by Thomas Luny (1826) showing the moment Napoleon was transferred from Bellerophon to Northumberland in the bay of Torbay (© Torbay Council). A recent BBC radio program (first 15 minutes), with guests authors Jenny Uglow and Andrew Roberts, describes the short but memorable moment that Napoleon spent in Torbay harbour.
