Savary was ‘Ministre de la Police’ from 3 June 1810 to 6 April 1814. The painting was commissioned in 1813 and was subsequently mentioned as being in the ‘Galerie des Ministres’ in the Château de Compiègne; it was later returned to the model in 1820.
