This assassination attempt took place on 24 December 1800 at 8-30pm. The carriage taking Bonaparte to the Opéra to hear the first performance of Haydn's Creation had passed twenty minutes earlier. Polignac was one of those who had conspired with Cadoudal against Napoleon. As he was in prison during the execution, he was not thus able to to see the event and so he drew it from eye-witness accounts.
