[Texte de la notice] »Géog. Île de la mer Atlantique, qui a six lieues de circuit ; elle est haute, montueuse, & entourée de rochers escarpés. Les montagnes qui se découvrent à 25 lieues en mer, sont couvertes la plûpart de verdure & de grands arbres, comme l’ébenier, tandis que les vallées sont fertiles en toutes sortes de fruits, & d’excellents légumés ; les arbres fruitiers y ont en même temps des fleurs, des fruits verds & des fruits mûrs ; les fôrets sont remplies d’orangers, de limoniers, de citronniers, etc. Il y a du gibier & des oiseaux en grande quantité, de la volaille, & du bétail qui est sauvage. Cett île fut découverte par Jean de Nova, Portuguais, en 1502, le jour de Sainte-Hélène. Les Portuguais l’ayant abandonné, les Hollandois s’en emparèrent, & la quittérent pour le cap de Bonne Espérance. La Compagnie des Indes d’Angleterre s’en saisit ; & depuis, les Anglois l’ont possédée, & l’ont mise en état de se bien défendre.
